Maths
At St. James', all children take part in a daily 30 minutes Basic Skills session and an applied Maths lesson. Basic skills sessions allow children to learn and consolidate basic number skills and calculations at a fast engaging pace. They then apply these skills in their maths lessons, and move to working at a greater depth by using these skills to reason and problem solve.
Children are encouraged to be independent learners and have a range of resources available to them to support them with their Maths learning. Common apparatus available are number lines/squares, dienes and numicon.
Opportunities to use maths across the curriculum are sought as appropriate so that children can transfer their skills and come to appreciate the importance of mathematics.
